Monthly News and Highlights…July 2018

President's Report
Hello Members,

Happy July!!!!

Canyon Club Card:
Members of The Golf Club are provided with an “introductory” Canyon Club Card for free (a $30 value).

If you haven’t already picked up your “Canyon Card” in the pro shop, an envelope with your name is waiting for you there! Included in the envelope is your free round certificate for renewing with the club in 2018!

How does the card work?
With this card you will receive a discount on rounds of golf you play at Redwood Canyon (see detail below). Be sure to show your card to get these reduced rates!

How long is the card good for?
The free introductory enrollment starting June 1 with the card expiring on December 31. You may renew anytime after January 1 to keep the card activated with the activation period being 12 months from the renewal date of purchase.

What other benefits will I get with the card?
As a Canyon Club member you can take advantage of the Twilight Rate 1 hour before the posted time.

Tournament Fee Increase:
At the June Board meeting, an increase in the tournament entry fee was discussed and approved. This will be the first increase in the tournament fees in many years. Beginning with the November 2018 tournament the entry fee will be increased $5 to $55. TC Tony and I will remind you as the rate increase date comes closer.

Course Conditions:
The course is in a pretty good condition! In fact, I think it is the best time of year for the course. The fairways are all green and the greens are looking great.

2018 Membership Drive:
I have worked with Touchstone about some course specific incentives for 2018.
Here is what we have so far:
10% on most items in the Pro Show. The will special order practically anything at competitive prices plus a golf club discount.

The NCGA has increased the fees charged to the golf clubs for membership in 2018. Your governing board of the club has decided at this time not to pass this increase on to our membership so our membership fees will not be increased for 2018. Renewal rate will be $115, New Membership rate will be $125 and Associate rate will be $65(limited to only 2 tournaments).

2018 Membership: 95 Members / Goal 150
We are still looking for more members, so please pass the word. Membership forms are available on the website, above the computer in the Pro Shop and on the Bulletin Board on the wall in the Bar annex. We look forward to seeing you on the course next year. Why not invite a friend too!

"Come play with a Board Member":
"Come play with a Board Member” on Sunday Morning for 18 holes of golf. This is an open play format for any member who wants to play on Sunday without the need to arrange your own foursome. This is limited to 6 spots on a first come first server bases for our 7am and 7:08am tee times (not available tournament Sundays). FYI, we usually finish around 11'ish so most of the day is still yours.  Depending on response, we might modify the “first come, first server” to give priority to members that have not play in the prior weeks. Please email “info@willowparkgolfclub.org” to reserve your spot. This is a great opportunity to have some fun and to have your voice be hear. If you "Beat a Board Member" think of the bragging rights. ;-)

2018 Tournament Calendar Import:
I created a file (2018_wpgc_events.ics) [revised 09/27] that you can download & use to import our Tournament Dates into most calendar programs. To import, do an internet search such as "import .ics into....(iphone, Android or Google Calendar)" to find directions for your calendar program. Standard warning...use at your own risk.

Please still make payment to "WPGC/WPMC"
Your Board and our Treasurer have asked me to remind you that while the course has a new name, our club does not. Please continue to make your checks out to "WPMC". The board will be discussing a name change at the next several meetings to address some issues with changing the name. We will keep you informed of the progress and send out official notice if and when the name change occurs.

Tournament Chair Report

June Tournament:
I trust everyone enjoyed the 6-6-6 format. We had a really good turnout for this one which indicates to me that you all like the format and the challenge. The only grumblings I heard were from players who mentioned their partner left them in some rather interesting situations during the Alternate Shot format which as in the past was the most difficult scoring format. The scores were a bit higher than last year but not far off and still very good.

Slow Play:
Well I must say thanks to all of you for keeping the pace of play moving along. It was a slow round for all of us as the foursome that started just in front of our tournament fell 2-3 holes behind and made little or no effort to pick up the pace. Thank you all for keeping up with the group in front of you.

July Tournament:
A Regular Net Flight format with a special event also taking place.
NCGA Qualifying - In addition will be 1st round qualifying for the 2019 NCGA 2-person team and the 2019 NCGA Regional Zone.
1. There will be signup sheets for both on the first tee.
2. You may sign up for one or both but only those on the signup sheet will be eligible.
3. Players must play both rounds from the Blue tee markers.
4. Players with an index of 18.5 or higher will be lowered to 18.4 for the qualifying score(Not applicable to the regular net event)
5. Players receive 90% of handicap(Not applicable to regular net event)

Playing it Down:
For the July and August tournaments we will be playing the ball down. You will not be allowed to touch or move your ball unless allowed to by Local or USGA rules. I will allow an exception that you can move from dirt to grass but only within 2 club lengths of your original location. If no grass is present within 2 club lengths, you must play it from its original location as it lies. A New/Old divot will not be considered as on dirt.

9th hole Tee Area:
I have decided that starting in July and for an undetermined period of time those playing the Blue tee’s will now play from the upper tee location. We will eventually move back to the lower tee location as winter approaches and the course gets wetter. As soon as I decide which month that will happen in I’ll let you all know.

August Tournament:
The August tournament is a 2 round Saturday/Sunday with an option to play Sunday only. The groups/starting times will be the same for both days so those playing Sunday only will be grouped and placed behind the Saturday/Sunday groups.

August Entry Deadline:
The entries for the August tournament will need to be received on or very near the deadline date of August 1. I will be out of town August 6-10 and unavailable to be contacted so I will have to finalize the groups and starting times by August 5. If you send in $100 it will be presumed you want to play Saturday/Sunday. If you send in $50 it will be presumed you want to play Sunday only. Thank you in advance for your prompt entry submission.

“Major Event” Minimum Play Criteria:
The Club Championship, The Skins Competition and The NCGA Qualifying are considered “Major” events and therefore have play criteria that must all be met for a player to be eligible. These are held in addition to our regular format so regardless of your criteria status you can of course play in the tournament’s but may not be eligible for your score to count in the “Major Event” also taking place. We have had this rule in place for many years and I mention it as a reminder as the events get closer. If you wish to check your status there is a document post on the board in the Pro Shop that is updated monthly.

Club Championship.
1. Play both rounds
2. Play both rounds from the Blue Tee Markers
3. Play in 50% of the tournaments January thru the end of August

October Skins.
1. Play in 2 rounds of qualifying to earn a spot
2. Play in 50% of the tournaments January thru the end of September.

NCGA Qualifiers.
1. Play in 2 rounds of qualifying to earn a spot
2. Play both rounds from the Blue Tee Markers
3. Play in 50% of the tournaments January thru the end of December.
4. Renew membership and be on the active roster on January 1 of the year of the NCGA tournaments you are qualifying for.

Tournament Deadlines:
These are the tournament deadlines I have to meet each month. I do not want to leave anyone out so it is important that you submit your entry on or very shortly after the deadline. I start preparation on the Tuesday prior to the tournament date and go with what I have at that time.
1. Entry Deadline - 11 days prior to the tournament
2. Preliminary count to course - 7 days prior to the tournament
3. Final count and groups - 4 days prior to the tournament.
4. Once the count and groups are finalized the only changes I can make are adding players to fill openings that may exist

Tee Assignments:
The tournaments should be competitive and enjoyable for all players but also must not provide an unfair advantage or disadvantages to a player or group of players. That said your tee box assignment is not cast in stone so if you feel the tee area you are assigned is not right for you please come see me and lets discuss it.

Course Conditions:
I try and evaluate the conditions before each tournament to determine what if anything needs to be modified for our tournament play. I post the rules/info on the first tee and I know you all browse these every tournament but I thought I’d mention it just in case it slips your mind now and then.
