Monthly News and Highlights…May 2018

President's Report
Hello Members,

Course Conditions:
The course is in a pretty good condition! In fact, I think it is the best time of year for the course. The fairways are all green and the greens are looking great.

2018 Membership Drive:
I have worked with Touchstone about some course specific incentives for 2018.
Here is what we have so far:
10% on most items in the Pro Show. The will special order practically anything at competitive prices plus a golf club discount.

The NCGA has increased the fees charged to the golf clubs for membership in 2018. Your governing board of the club has decided at this time not to pass this increase on to our membership so our membership fees will not be increased for 2018. Renewal rate will be $115, New Membership rate will be $125 and Associate rate will be $65(limited to only 2 tournaments).

2018 Membership: 93 Members / Goal 150
We are still looking for more members, so please pass the word. Membership forms are available on the website, above the computer in the Pro Shop and on the Bulletin Board on the wall in the Bar annex. We look forward to seeing you on the course next year. Why not invite a friend too!

"Come play with a Board Member":
"Come play with a Board Member” on Sunday Morning for 18 holes of golf. This is an open play format for any member who wants to play on Sunday without the need to arrange your own foursome. This is limited to 6 spots on a first come first server bases for our 7am and 7:08am tee times (not available tournament Sundays). FYI, we usually finish around 11'ish so most of the day is still yours.  Depending on response, we might modify the “first come, first server” to give priority to members that have not play in the prior weeks. Please email “” to reserve your spot. This is a great opportunity to have some fun and to have your voice be hear. If you "Beat a Board Member" think of the bragging rights. ;-)

2018 Tournament Calendar Import:
I created a file (2018_wpgc_events.ics) [revised 09/27] that you can download & use to import our Tournament Dates into most calendar programs. To import, do an internet search such as "import .ics into....(iphone, Android or Google Calendar)" to find directions for your calendar program. Standard warning...use at your own risk.

Please still make payment to "WPGC/WPMC"
Your Board and our Treasurer have asked me to remind you that while the course has a new name, our club does not. Please continue to make your checks out to "WPMC". The board will be discussing a name change at the next several meetings to address some issues with changing the name. We will keep you informed of the progress and send out official notice if and when the name change occurs.

Tournament Chair Report

I just want to remind all of you that if you sign up for a tournament and don’t notify me that you have to cancel and just not show up you will in all likelihood lose your entry fee. The course is paid at around 12:00pm for the final player count that I gave them 4 days prior to the tournament adjusted for notified cancellations. If you notify me you will receive a credit to be used for a future tournament, if you don’t you will forfeit you entry fee.

I make a final check of my email at 6:00pm the day before the start of the tournament. You can also call the course on the morning of the day the tournament starts and leave me a message. Don’t depend on me noticing your absence, get word to me before we pay the course.

Future Tournaments: Well summer is almost here and with it we will start out qualifying rounds for the October skins, 2019 NCGA regional Zone, 2019 NCGA 2 man and of course our club championship. The tournament calendar indicates what event will be taking place for each month so if you haven’t looked at it in a while you may want to take a peek. Remember that these events as run as side events during the tournaments and in no way have any effect on regular net flight competition that is also taking place.

NCGA Regional Zone:
As you know we send a foursome to represent the club in the East Bay Regional Zone competition. This year the players were Mark Christensen, Dave Harding, Jim Derdevanis and Tony Paniagua. The competition was held April 16-17 at Carmel Valley Ranch and Poppy Hills. The scoring is the best net 2 of the 4 scores on each hole. The weather during the first round included Cold, Wind, Rain and even Hail. This unfortunately produced a respectable but high score of 142. The second round was clear but cold with our team scoring a 135 but everyone else also improved under the better conditions so our 277 two day total was good for 8th.

Please keep in mind that contrary to rumors I don’t read minds nor do I have telepathic powers. I base the player count each month on what I have. If you want in the tournament it is up to you to send in your entry by or close to the deadline. If you mail late or realize after the deadline you forgot, send me an email at the club address below. Also remember that paying the day of the tournament should be the exception not the rule.

Entry Deadline is 11 days prior to the tournament
Preliminary player count to the course is 7 days prior to the tournament
Final player count and group listing to the course 4 days prior to the tournament
At this point no changes to the groups or times but players may still enter to fill any openings if any exist

Tee Assignments
There is no magic formula I go by to determine what tee assignment you get. Net Scores, Skill Level, Handicap, Age, Competitive Fairness are just a few things I consider to determine where I think you will be competitive and enjoy the round. Lack of distance (not accuracy) is a good barometer to determine if you may be playing from the wrong tees. If you feel that you need to move up, please come see me and present your case. If your request is approved it will be for a probationary period for which an evaluation will be conducted before a final ruling to determine if it will be made permanent.

Course Conditions:
The course has recently had the greens aerated. They appear to be recovering quickly and should be back to normal quickly. They did release water from the dam during our last rain storm raising the creek level to the top. With the rain it caused some flooding but they have worked hard and got the course back into excellent condition.

14th hole Tee Box:
You may have also noticed that the upper 14th tee area has been going through a rebuild. It is expected to be completed soon and as soon as it is we will utilize the new area.

9th hole Tee Box: For a long while now the Blue Tee location on the 9th hole has been relocated down near the White Tees. My feeling at the time was that it presents an unfair disadvantage to those who play from the Blue but compete in a flight with players who play from the White. Yes it’s only 1 hole but its 100 yards longer and even in the summer when the ground is dry still makes the 3rd shot to the green substantially longer than those playing from the White tees. My original plan was to make it temporary and return in the summer but I’m now leaning on making the new location of the Blue tee area permanent. I am continuing to gather data and expect to make a decision before our June tournament. 50-50 raffle winner:Lou Lozano

Tony Paniagua
